From setting personal records to breaking school records, the girls track team has done it all this season, and it isn’t over yet.

The season started back on Jan. 16 when the team first began competing in indoor track meets. Their first outdoor meet was scheduled on April 3, but due to the snowy weather, it had to be cancelled.

At the recent D117 Invite on April 20, the girls took home third place. In one of their earlier indoor meets, the team placed first. It was the very first time in school history that a girls track team took home first place at a meet.

“As a team, we won two of our meets, which was a huge accomplishment, as well as breaking a ton of school records,” said sophomore Emmy Soder, varsity track runner.

To keep improving, their practices typically consist of running laps around the school and drills like high knees or sprints. They then move to smaller groups where they are able focus on their individual goals.

“Track is such a mental sport, and as soon as you let it get in your head, it shows in your times/jumps,” said sophomore Nicole Meyer, varsity track jumper.

The team is currently preparing for the IHSA Track & Field Sectionals on May 10 at Palatine High School. Runners are hoping for a chance to move on to IHSA State Finals on the following weekend, starting May 17. Jesse Wolter, varsity track coach, is optimistic about what the girls can accomplish.

“This team has been setting records and making history from the very first meet of the year. It is a bold statement, but I can honestly say this is the best team we have ever had in school history,” Wolter said.
