The Knights Way started in August, after Jenny Andersen formed a group to get a better view of the school and students.
“The Knights Way group is a student steering committee, and it’s composed of student leaders in the building who help guide some of the programs and activities that I facilitate as a student assistance program coordinator. Some of the things they worked on this year are activities for finals. They host the zen den in the library. Last month we celebrated Black History Month. The students also presented the signs of suicide, depression awareness and suicide prevention programing in classes with me. This month we are doing Grayslake North High School (GNHS) Celebrates Diversity, just kind of stuff around wellness, health, community, connectedness, and things like that,” said student assistance program coordinator Jenny Andersen.
Along with many other students, Natalie Davila took part in the events that the Knights Way group hosted.
One of the events on March 21 took place here at GNHS. Veronica Ortiz along with other members of the Knights Way group tookpart in this event.
“On March 21, GNHS Knights Way hosted a Cultural Diverse Supershow. It started at seven and everyone was invited! There was variety of activities that were going on like a fashion show, performances, food, and much more,” said senior Veronica Ortiz.
The Knights Way group helps Jenny Andersen get a better understanding of the students here at GNHS, and it also helps students feel more comfortable and wanting to get involved.
“I had students who were in this group tell me that they were feeling really more connected here at school for the first time in a long time. My hope is that by doing activities like these, where we are supporting students in a lot of different ways, that kids do feel connected here. They feel like GNHS is a home, and they really have a place where they can fit in here,” Andersen said.
